SUMMARY:Virtual community screening / MOTHERLOAD\, the movie: a covideo party and Zoom Q&A with director Liz Canning
DESCRIPTION:Our grand finale to Bike Week 2020 is hosting MOTHERLOAD as a virtual community screening and covideo party. We’re delighted that director Liz Canning will join us for a Q&A on Zoom immediately afterward for a panel discussion with urban liveability and health experts. \nThis 86 minute documentary from the USA captures a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of modern life\, its planetary impact\, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote. It won a Sundance Special Jury Prize in 2019. \nFilm maker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until her twins were born in 2008. Motherhood was challenging and hauling babies via car felt stifling. She googled ‘family bike’ and discovered people using cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more\, and MOTHERLOAD was born.  \nWatch MOTHERLOAD official trailer on YouTube \nJoin us on Sunday evening\, 27 September\, for a covideo party on Twitter using the hashtags #MOTHERLOAD #MOTHERLOADgalway. \n Film maker Liz Canning will join us straight afterwards for a Q&A with a panel of urban liveability and health experts\, parents\, and the Galway Cycling Campaign. \nRegister for your MOTHERLOAD and Zoom meeting links here. \nScreening and Q&A details\nLinks will be emailed to you on the day of the event. \nScreening time: 7.30pm to 9pm \nQ&A on Zoom: 9pm to 10pm \nHandles: @MOTHERLOADmovie @GalwayCycling \nHashtags: #MOTHERLOAD #MOTHERLOADmovie #MOTHERLOADgalway #BikeWeek2020 \nBike Week 2020\nThis event is organised by the Galway Cycling Campaign and funded through a Bike Week 2020 grant awarded by Galway City Council. \nBike Week is a Government of Ireland initiative\, under the broader Active Travel initiative.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime webinar / Bike Parking and the Bottom Line with Dutch Ambassador\, HE Adriaan Palm
DESCRIPTION:The Embassy of the Netherlands\, Dutch Cycling Embassy\, Dublin Town\, and Development Studies Association of Ireland at Trinity College Dublin join Galway Cycling Campaign to discuss Bike Parking and the Bottom Line. \nThe Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on local businesses and retail in Galway city and county. With bicycle use rapidly growing since lockdown\, and more of us living our lives more locally\, business owners and retailers know that a significant portion of customers now pedal – or want to pedal – their way to shop and dine. International research shows that safe\, secure and sheltered bicycle parking is investing in local and loyal customers. \n\nHis Excellency\, Adriaan Palm\,  Ambassador at The Netherlands Embassy to Ireland\nChris Bruntlett\, Marketing & Communication Manager at the Dutch Cycling Embassy\nRichard Guiney\, CEO of Dublin Town\nClodagh Colleran\, Development Studies Association of Ireland\, Trinity College Dublin\n\nThis event will be a soft launch of the Galway Supermarket Bike Parking Survey by Galway Cycling Campaign. The formal launch will be by Minister of State at the Department of Transport\, Hildegarde Naughton TD on Friday 25 September. \n>>Register for webinar ‘Bike Parking and the Bottom Line'<< \nLearning from the Dutch experience\nSpeaking in advance of the event on Galway Bay FM\, Ambassador Palm said that he knows from experience of his hometown how more people cycling and quality infrastructure improves the attractiveness and accessibility of our cities\, villages and towns and encourages people to spend more time there.  \n“The recent surge in cycling in Ireland should be capitalised on as an excellent opportunity for businesses and the cycling community to work together for their mutual benefit. The Netherlands is a flat country with 17 million people and 22 million bicycles. It was not always this way. Galway is a relatively flat city with a lot of potential to move around by bicycle and to shop by bike.” \nInclusive bike parking\nLast year\, Trinity College Dublin installed disabled bicycle parking facilities\, the first college in Ireland to do so.\n\nThe spaces\, which allow for wider\, hand-operated tricycles\, as well as regular bikes\, are clearly signposted\, step-free and located next to a ramp.\n\nWhen on her bike\, nobody would know Clodagh Colleran has a progressive and degenerative disability. Born with hip dysplasia that went undiagnosed for too long\, walking can be difficult. However\, a bike saddle suits her biomechanics\, as she can maintain a straight spine. \n“Cycling opened up the city for me\,” said Ms Colleran\, who commutes by bike to work in Trinity and is on the Healthy Trinity: Smarter Travel Committee. “It disguises my limp\, prolonged the life of my hip and helps me maintain a healthy weight\, all things that are hugely important for my health and well-being.” \n\nLearning from Dublin retail experience\nA recent DublinTown survey of member businesses on the Grafton Street Area  pedestrianisation trial was overwhelmingly in favour of opening up streets to people. \nThe findings of the surveys show that the majority of DublinTown member businesses – over 85% – in the greater Grafton Street area want the trial pedestrianisation to continue on a more permanent basis. \nRichard will be familiar to Galway audiences from a previous role as Director of Corporate Services with Chambers Ireland. He will share the experience of Dublin retailers and city centre businesses in embracing cycling and pedestrianisation.  \nSpeaking in advance of the event\, Richard said\, \n“Pre-Covid we saw changes in how people were engaging with urban centres\,” commented Richard. “These trends are accelerating at a dramatic pace.  Our towns must be sustainable both economically and environmentally.  Enhanced cycling provision is core to achieving this.  This is no longer a nice to have – it is central to the future proofing of our towns and cities.” \nWebinar details\nThis webinar is aimed at representatives from the business community\, political representatives\, local and national policymakers\, placemakers\, academics\, people interested in liveable neighbourhoods\, community groups\, and representatives of the cycling community.  \nThe conversation will identify local challenges and opportunities for “quick wins” as well as demonstrating some practical examples from the Netherlands.  \nAttendees can join in the conversation using the Chat and ask questions through the Q&A functions throughout the presentations. \nThere will be an opportunity for audience Q&A at the end of the session. \nThe Zoom webinar will be recorded and shared on the Galway Cycling Campaign’s website and YouTube channel. \nPlease join us from 12.50 for a prompt 1pm start. \nBike Week 2020\nThis event is organised by the Galway Cycling Campaign and funded through a Bike Week 2020 grant awarded by Galway City Council. \nBike Week is a Government of Ireland initiative\, under the broader Active Travel initiative.

SUMMARY:Survey / Galway School Bike Count
DESCRIPTION:As part of Bike Week\, Galway Cycle Bus and Galway Cycling Campaign have teamed up to do an ambitious yet simple project this week: we’re going to count the number of bikes outside every primary and secondary school in Galway City. \nWe want to find out how many children (and teachers) are cycling to school in Galway. We can see the amount of bikes at schools has increased. We want to count the bikes this week and to repeat the exercise a number of times at random throughout the school year. \nWe’re asking parents\, teachers and principals to count\, and photograph\, the student bikes parked on school grounds on Tuesday 22 or Wednesday 23 September and send them onto us via email\, DM on Twitter\, or on a form on the Galway Cycle Bus website. \nData will be shared with all participating schools and all data gathered will be published for analysis. \nEmail galwaycyclebus-at-gmail-dot-com to participate and for more information. \nPhoto credit: #AndSheCycles campaign by An Taisce-Green Schools
